Project spotlight Arden Hills, MN Backyard regrade & sod installation · 2023 |
From muddy mess to 5,000 sq ft of green — in a day
← Back to all projectsJulia had everything except grass
Julia had everything going for her backyard — space, privacy, a great layout. What she didn't have was grass. A previous hydroseed attempt had failed to take, leaving her with a bare, compacted yard that turned into a muddy bog every time it rained. With two dogs making full use of the space, that wasn't a minor inconvenience. It was a real problem.
She reached out to Heritage Outdoors ready for a real solution. We assessed the yard, determined the grade needed correction to improve drainage, and put together a plan: full CMP Hydra Bucket excavation, regrade the entire backyard, and lay 5,000+ square feet of sod — all in a single day.
We felt it the next morning. But Julia had her backyard back. The dogs were thrilled.
Patchy hydroseed, bare dirt, muddy dogs
The hydroseed had tried. Minnesota spring had won. What was left was a mix of bare patches, compacted soil, and stubborn weeds — a yard that made mud every time it rained and offered the dogs no resistance whatsoever.

CMP Hydra Bucket in, grade corrected, sod down
Full excavation with a CMP Hydra Bucket to break up compacted soil, regrade for proper drainage, and then 5,000+ square feet of sod going down in a single push. One long day — the kind you feel the next morning.

The seed wasn't the problem. The grade was.
Hydroseed fails when the conditions underneath aren't right. Poor drainage pulls water away before it can absorb, compacted soil prevents roots from establishing, and any foot traffic before germination sets things back to zero. In Julia's case, the grade was working against her from the start.
The fix wasn't to try seed again — it was to fix what caused the first attempt to fail. Excavate the compacted layer, correct the grade so water drains the right direction, and then lay sod that establishes immediately instead of giving the yard another 4–6 week window to go wrong.
Sod is the right call when you need a yard that works now. Two dogs and a Minnesota summer don't give you a six-week margin.

Lawn & sod questions we hear often
Why did my hydroseed fail in Minnesota?
Hydroseed fails when conditions aren't right — poor grade, inadequate drainage, compacted soil, or traffic before the seed establishes. In Minnesota, spring rains and heavy foot traffic (especially with dogs) can wash seed away or prevent establishment. If hydroseed has failed, the soil and grade usually need correction before reseeding or sodding.
Should I sod or reseed my lawn in Minnesota?
Sod is the better choice when you need immediate results, have drainage issues, or have heavy foot traffic from kids or dogs. Sod establishes immediately and doesn't give weeds a window to move in. If your previous seed attempt failed, address the underlying grade and drainage issues first — otherwise the same conditions will cause sod to fail too.
How much does sod installation cost in Minnesota?
Sod installation in Minnesota typically costs $1.50–$3.00 per square foot installed depending on site preparation required, grading needs, and access. A 5,000 sq ft backyard with grading runs approximately $8,000–$15,000. Heritage Outdoors provides free on-site estimates — call 651-219-3668.
