Paver patios & walkways

Built for Minnesota.
Not just built.

A paver patio or walkway installed without understanding Minnesota's climate is a surface that will give you problems. Freeze-thaw cycles here are aggressive. Soil moves. Water finds every weakness in a base that wasn't compacted properly or doesn't drain correctly. We've seen what fails and we build accordingly.

Industry standard for residential patio base depth is 4–6 inches. We install 6–8 inches. Industry standard plate compactors handle 2–4 inches per pass. Ours handles 10–12 inches — more passes at greater depth means a denser, more stable base that handles Minnesota's ground movement better than most patios in this market. We level using a ZipLevel hydrostatic altimeter — accurate to 0.01 inches — and we own three units kept in rotation for frequent calibration.

Whether you're building a backyard patio, a front entry walkway, a garage connection, or all of the above, the base work and installation process are the same. We treat every square foot the same way, whether it's the patio itself or the walkway connecting it to your back door.

Why installation quality matters in Minnesota

What most contractors skip.
What we don't.

Deeper base than industry standard
Industry standard for residential patio base depth is 4–6 inches. We install 6–8 inches. Whenever possible we also over-base — extending the compacted aggregate 4–6 inches past the paver edge on all sides. That means no soft perimeter, no edge settling, no pavers gradually dropping at the corners over time. In Minnesota, where soil heaves every winter, the extra base depth and the over-base extension make a real difference.
Heavy compaction equipment
Most residential contractors use plate compactors that handle 2–4 inches per pass. Ours handles 10–12 inches per pass. The difference is base density — more compaction per lift means a tighter, more stable base. We actually had to cut our wooden grading stakes in half because the full-length stakes would shatter before we could pound them low enough.
Easy to shovel
Heritage Outdoors uses ZipLevel — a pressurized hydrostatic altimeter accurate to 0.01 inches — on every install. We own three units kept in rotation for frequent calibration. The result is a surface as smooth and consistent as new concrete, just as easy to shovel. That matters in Minnesota.
Open-graded base option
Instead of standard compacted aggregate, open-graded base uses clear washed stone — voids in the stone let water drain freely through the base rather than accumulate. Less water in the base means less freeze-thaw movement over time. Ground warmth also permeates more readily through open-graded stone, helping melt residual snow at the surface. Add $1–$3/sq ft.
Paver walkways

The patio is the destination.
The walkway is how you get there.

A great patio without a proper walkway is an afterthought. Walkways are often the first hardscape element a homeowner or guest interacts with — the front entry path from the driveway, the connection from the garage to the back door, the side path that ties the yard together.

We treat walkways with the same base depth, compaction standards, and material quality as patio work. There's no reason a 4-foot-wide walkway should be built any differently than a 400 sq ft patio — and on our jobs, it isn't.

Walkways also give you the opportunity to tie materials and patterns together across the whole property. A patio in RCP Reno with a matching running bond walkway to the garage creates a cohesive outdoor space rather than a patio that feels dropped into the yard.

Front Entry Walkways
From the driveway or street to the front door — the most common walkway project we do. Typically 4–5 feet wide with a running bond or herringbone pattern. Often combined with a front stoop or landing. First impression hardscape done right.
Most popular · curb appeal · low maintenance
Garage & Side Connections
Connecting a new detached garage, linking the side yard to the backyard, or building a utility path that doesn't look like one. These projects often pair with patio installs to create a unified hardscape layout across the whole property.
New garage connections · side yards · utility paths
Patio-Integrated Walkways
Walkways that extend directly from the patio — same material, same base, built as a single connected system. The cleanest result is a walkway and patio installed in one continuous project, so the base prepped and the material matches seamlessly from end to end.

Materials we work with

The right paver
for your project

We don't push one brand. We work with all major manufacturers and recommend the material that fits your project, your aesthetic, and your budget. Some homeowners want a cost-competitive face-mix paver that outperforms its price. Others want premium Belgard or Unilock with an extended color library. Others want natural stone — flagstone, bluestone, or quartzite — that no manufactured product can replicate.

Our job is to match you with the right material, not the most expensive one. We'll walk you through the options during the free site visit and tell you exactly what we'd choose and why.

RCP (Rochester Concrete Products)
Minnesota-manufactured face-mix pavers that disrupted the market with premium quality at competitive pricing. The Reno and Tahoe lines deliver smooth and textured face-mix character that competitors charge significantly more for. RCP Windom is a large-format face-mix paver ideal for modern applications.
Our most-used brand · Minnesota made · exceptional value
Belgard
One of the largest hardscape manufacturers in North America. Extensive color and texture library spanning traditional tumbled pavers to large-format contemporary styles. Belgard's Urbana and Dimensions series are popular choices for clean, modern patio designs in the Twin Cities.
Premium residential · wide color range · modern options
Unilock
Known for proprietary Enduracolor Plus technology that resists fading and staining longer than standard concrete pavers. Unilock's Treo Smooth and Series 3000 are strong performers for both traditional and contemporary patio and walkway designs.
Color durability · premium finish · residential & commercial
Natural Stone
Flagstone, bluestone, quartzite, and fieldstone create patios and walkways that no manufactured product can replicate. Every slab is unique. Natural stone ages beautifully, requires almost no maintenance, and carries a permanence that concrete pavers can't match.
Irreplaceable character · ages beautifully · no two alike
Honest pricing

What paver patios & walkways cost
in the Twin Cities

Most hardscape contractors won't publish pricing. We will. Paver patio and walkway cost in Minnesota depends primarily on paver material, size, pattern complexity, and whether steps or walls are included. Walkways follow the same sq ft pricing as patio work — same materials, same base, same process. Here's how to think about it before we ever step on your property.

Quality paver · RCP or Willow Creek
$35–$42
per square foot installed
RCP Reno, RCP Tahoe, Willow Creek Cobblestone or Brickstone — quality-rated, PSI-tested pavers that are our most popular starting point. Running bond or simple pattern, straightforward rectangular patio or front entry walkway with good equipment access. Not big-box pavers — these are the same products used on higher-end installs.
Premium paver · complex pattern
$42–$50
per square foot installed
Belgard, Unilock, or large-format pavers, 45-degree herringbone or soldier course border, irregular shapes, or tight access lots requiring additional hand work. Most mid-to-upper residential projects fall here.
Raised patio · natural stone · complex
$50+
per square foot installed
Raised patio systems with retaining wall components, natural stone patios or walkways, multi-level designs, or projects combining pavers with significant grade challenges.

* Steps, retaining walls, and fire features are priced separately. Natural stone steps run $250–$500 per step installed. Block retaining walls run $55–$70/sq ft. Boulder walls $40–$100+/sq ft. Sealing runs $3–$6/sq ft depending on sealer quality and finish. Open-graded base is an upgrade that uses clear washed stone instead of compacted aggregate, allowing water to drain freely through the base — add approximately $1–$3/sq ft. $5,000 project minimum on all work. We provide a detailed line-item estimate — no surprises.

How it works

Simple process.
No surprises.

Three steps is all it takes for most projects. Haven is your point of contact from the first call through the final walkthrough — every single time.

01
Discovery call
Haven picks up or calls back quickly. This first conversation covers what you're envisioning, where the property is, and roughly what your budget looks like. We ask about budget early — not to squeeze every dollar, but because it genuinely changes what we recommend. If the project isn't a fit, we'll tell you honestly on the call rather than waste your time.
02
Free site visit & ballpark
Jacob or Haven walks the property — grades, drainage, site access, existing conditions. By the end of the visit you'll have a realistic ballpark, not a vague "it depends." Any complicating factors like engineering requirements are flagged before you've committed to anything. Free, no obligation.
03
Proposal & build
For complex or multi-service projects, a design deposit kicks off Haven's formal design work — it applies directly to your project if you move forward, and you keep the design if you don't. Straightforward installs move straight to a detailed proposal. Once signed, Jacob leads the install personally. One of us is on site every day.

Common questions

Patio & walkway questions
we hear all the time

How much does a paver patio cost in Minnesota?

Paver patios in Minnesota typically run $35–$50+ per square foot installed, depending on paver material, pattern complexity, site conditions, and whether steps or walls are included. Our starting-point pavers — RCP Reno, RCP Tahoe, Willow Creek Cobblestone and Brickstone — are quality-rated, PSI-tested products we stand behind on every install. We don't use big-box store pavers. Premium products like Belgard or Unilock, 45-degree herringbone patterns, or raised patio systems push toward the higher end. Heritage Outdoors has a $5,000 project minimum. We always provide a free on-site estimate with transparent pricing before any work begins.

How much does a paver walkway cost in Minnesota?

Paver walkways run the same $35–$50+ per square foot range as patio work — same materials, same base preparation, same installation process. Walkway cost is primarily driven by linear footage, width, pattern choice, and whether steps or grade changes are involved. A standard front entry walkway or garage connection is one of the most common projects we complete. We provide a free on-site estimate with transparent, line-item pricing.

How long do paver patios and walkways last in Minnesota?

A properly installed paver patio or walkway in Minnesota should last 20–30+ years with normal use and basic maintenance. Unlike poured concrete, individual pavers flex independently through freeze-thaw cycles rather than cracking as a slab — so the surface holds up better over time. Sealing every few years helps preserve color and is strongly recommended if you plan to use salt or ice melt in the winter — it significantly reduces brine absorption into the paver surface. If a paver ever chips or settles, it can be replaced individually without touching the rest of the surface.

What paver patterns work best for walkways in Minnesota?

Running bond is the most popular walkway pattern — clean, easy to shovel, and works with nearly every paver style. Herringbone at 45 degrees is a strong choice for wider walkways or when the patio and walkway share the same material. For natural stone walkways, irregular flagstone or Chilton steppers create a rustic, organic look. Heritage Outdoors walks you through pattern options during the free site visit based on your material, your yard, and how the walkway connects to everything else.

What is the best paver for a patio or walkway in Minnesota?

The best paver depends on your budget, aesthetic, and how the space will be used. For cost-competitive face-mix quality, RCP Reno and Tahoe are exceptional — Minnesota-manufactured pavers that deliver premium appearance at a price competitors can't match. For premium residential projects, Belgard and Unilock offer extensive color and texture options. For natural stone character, flagstone and bluestone create one-of-a-kind surfaces. Heritage Outdoors works with all major brands and recommends the right material for your specific project.

Do paver patios require a permit in Minnesota?

Most ground-level paver patios in Minnesota do not require a permit. However, raised patios with structural walls, patios over a certain square footage, or projects in regulated shoreland areas may require permits depending on your municipality. Requirements vary by city — Woodbury, Minneapolis, and Saint Paul each have different thresholds. Heritage Outdoors always checks permit requirements for your specific property before work begins.

How long does it take to install a paver patio or walkway?

Most residential paver patio installations take 2–5 days depending on size, complexity, and whether retaining walls or steps are included. A straightforward 400 sq ft ground-level patio typically runs 2–3 days. A raised patio with a retaining wall system and steps can run 4–7 days. Walkway-only projects can often be completed in 1–2 days. Heritage Outdoors cleans up the worksite each day and completes a final walkthrough with you before leaving.
