150 feet of mosaic stone.
Grant, MN.
Built to outlast all of us
At the end of a dead-end road, down a long private driveway, Tim and his wife had built something most people spend their whole lives looking for — a true sanctuary. Wooded acreage, total privacy, and a backyard that slopes gently down to their own pond.
The property was already exceptional. Tim just wanted more of it. The slope down to the pond was natural and beautiful, but it limited the flat usable space behind the house. A boulder wall was the answer. Nothing engineered or manufactured — just natural stone stacked with purpose, holding back the grade and expanding the space where they actually live.
The result was a 150-foot mosaic-style boulder wall averaging 4 feet high — 2 to 4 boulders stacked and fitted across the entire run, placed by hand, built to look like it grew there. When natural stone is set right, it doesn't just hold a slope. It becomes part of the landscape. This wall will be standing long after any of us are around to look at it.
A sanctuary that deserved more space
Grant, Minnesota sits in the heart of the East Metro — tucked between Stillwater and the Washington County countryside, with the kind of acreage properties that remind you why people choose to live out here. Dead-end roads. Long driveways. Privacy you can actually feel.
Tim's property had all of it. The pond at the back of the yard was the centerpiece — quiet, private, entirely theirs. The slope running down to the water was gentle enough to walk but too steep to do much with. Every foot of grade was a foot of usable space that wasn't being used.
A boulder wall doesn't fight a landscape like this — it fits into it. Block or concrete would have looked out of place on a property this natural. Boulders look like they were always there, because on a property like Tim's, they should have been.

Not stacked. Fitted.
A mosaic-style boulder wall is different from a simple single-row installation. Rather than placing one large boulder per course, the mosaic method uses 2 to 4 boulders stacked and fitted across the height of the wall — each piece chosen for how it locks against its neighbors, distributing weight across the entire run.
Across 150 linear feet, that means hundreds of individual placement decisions — reading each boulder's shape, weight, and face before setting it, making sure the joints are staggered, the batter is correct, and the finished face looks like nature assembled it rather than a machine.
We buy our boulders direct. That means we can be selective about the stone we bring to a job — choosing pieces that fit the mosaic rather than forcing whatever's available into position. The wall is only as good as the stone.

Boulder wall questions we hear all the time
How much does a boulder retaining wall cost in Minnesota?
Boulder retaining walls in Minnesota typically cost $55–$80 per linear foot installed. Because Heritage Outdoors buys boulders direct, natural stone is often comparable in cost to manufactured block. Mosaic-style walls with fitted multiple-course placement take more time but produce a wall that's stronger, more beautiful, and more natural-looking than single-row installations.
What is a mosaic boulder wall?
A mosaic boulder wall uses 2–4 boulders stacked and fitted across the height of the wall rather than a single large boulder per course. Each stone is chosen for how it locks against its neighbors, distributing weight across the entire run. The result looks like natural stone outcropping — fitted by hand, built to last for generations.
Why choose a boulder wall over a block retaining wall?
Boulder walls are ideal for wooded, rural, and lakeside properties where a manufactured material would look out of place. Natural stone ages beautifully, requires almost no maintenance, and fits the Minnesota landscape in a way block never will. Heritage Outdoors buys boulders direct, making natural stone often cost-competitive with manufactured block.
