Project overview

The garage contractor left.
The dirt pile didn't.

John had his garage rebuilt — a big project, done right. But when the contractor finished and packed up, what remained behind the garage was a significant dirt pile. Unmanaged grade, no structure, nothing holding it together. Not dangerous, but not something you want to look at either.

A fieldstone boulder wall was the right fix. No concrete, no manufactured block — just natural granite fieldstone set course by course to hold the grade permanently and clean up what the garage job left behind. The kind of wall that looks intentional from day one and only gets better as time passes.

This was the first of Heritage Outdoors' last three jobs of the 2024 season — Lake Elmo, then Wayzata Country Club, then Wyoming MN to close it out. A strong way to finish the year.

Before

A rebuilt garage.
An unfinished hillside.

The garage project was complete — but the grade behind it wasn't. An overgrown, unstructured dirt pile sat against the back of the property with nothing holding it together. The kind of thing that erodes a little more every spring and never gets better on its own.

The approach

Clean it up.
Make it permanent.

01
Grade that needed structure
The dirt pile wasn't going anywhere on its own — except down, slowly, every spring. Without structure to hold it, erosion would keep working on it year after year. A boulder wall gives the grade a permanent home: the soil stays put, the wall holds its shape, and the property looks finished rather than abandoned.
02
Right material for the setting
Lake Elmo properties tend toward wooded, natural settings — manufactured block would have looked out of place. Minnesota fieldstone sits naturally in that landscape. It looks like it belongs there because the stone literally came from here. As vegetation grows back in around the wall, it'll blend into the property rather than stand out from it.
03
Late season, no problem
This project kicked off the final push of Heritage Outdoors' 2024 season — Lake Elmo first, then straight to Wayzata Country Club, then Wyoming MN to close it out in December. Boulder work in late fall is exactly what the material is built for. No concrete, no polymeric sand, nothing that freezes and fails. Just stone and gravel, moving through the season.

"The funny part of this one came later — we were on a guided waterfowl hunt in Lake Elmo the following fall and got talking with the guide. Turns out his dad was John. He said he stopped by during the install and thought we looked familiar. Small world."

The build

Boulders in.
Dirt pile gone.

The Kubota excavator placed each fieldstone boulder course by course — drainage fabric installed behind the wall before backfilling, base prep done right. Shot from inside the CAT cab, you can see the first courses taking shape against the hillside. What was an unmanaged mess is becoming a wall that will hold that grade for the next hundred years.

What was built

A problem solved.
A wall built to last.

Fieldstone retaining wall
Minnesota fieldstone boulder wall holding the grade behind John's rebuilt garage. The unmanaged dirt pile is now a structured, permanent feature — erosion stopped, grade locked in, property looking finished.
Natural material, natural setting
Fieldstone sourced direct from Minnesota's boulder belt — the same glacial granite that's been part of this landscape for ten thousand years. In a wooded Lake Elmo setting, there's no better fit. As the vegetation grows back in around it, the wall will look like it's always been there.
Zero maintenance going forward
No pins, no caps, no polymeric sand to refresh. Natural granite doesn't spall, rot, or rust. John's wall will hold that grade through every Minnesota winter without anyone touching it — which is exactly the point.
Timing your project

Boulder walls work
late and early in the season.

This was the first of three late-season boulder wall projects Heritage Outdoors completed to close out 2024. No concrete. No polymeric sand. No temperature-sensitive materials. Just stone, gravel base, and drainage fabric — which means the install window runs from late October through early December and picks back up again in March. Don't wait for peak season if you don't have to.

Common questions

Boulder walls in Lake Elmo —
what people ask us

Can a boulder wall fix a dirt pile or grading problem left by a contractor in Minnesota?

Yes — boulder walls are one of the most effective ways to address a leftover grading problem or dirt pile from construction work. When contractors rebuild structures like garages, the excavated material often gets pushed against the foundation or left as an unmanaged slope. A fieldstone boulder wall holds the grade permanently, prevents erosion, and turns what was an eyesore into a feature. Heritage Outdoors handles exactly these situations — call 651-219-3668 for a free estimate.

How much does a fieldstone boulder wall cost in Lake Elmo MN?

Boulder walls in the Lake Elmo and east metro area typically run $40–$100+ per square foot installed depending on wall height, stone type, site access, and drainage requirements. Heritage Outdoors sources fieldstone direct from Minnesota's boulder belt, which keeps material costs competitive. We have a $5,000 project minimum and always provide a free on-site estimate. Call 651-219-3668.

How long does a fieldstone boulder wall last in Minnesota?

A properly built fieldstone boulder wall can last 50–200+ years in Minnesota's climate. Natural granite doesn't crack under freeze-thaw stress, doesn't rust, and doesn't spall like manufactured block. The key factors are proper base preparation, drainage fabric behind each course, and quality stone. Heritage Outdoors sources fieldstone direct from Minnesota quarries for maximum durability.

Can boulder walls be installed in late fall in Minnesota?

Yes — boulder walls are one of the best hardscape projects for late-season installation in Minnesota. Because there's no concrete, no polymeric sand, and no temperature-sensitive materials involved, Heritage Outdoors can install through late October and November and into early December depending on ground conditions. The Lake Elmo project was completed in fall 2024 as the first of Heritage Outdoors' last three projects of the season.

Does Heritage Outdoors serve Lake Elmo and the east metro?

Yes — Lake Elmo is right in Heritage Outdoors' backyard. We serve Lake Elmo, Woodbury, Stillwater, Oakdale, Mahtomedi, and the full east metro, as well as the Twin Cities metro. Call 651-219-3668 or visit heritageoutdoorsmn.com for a free estimate.
