Project overview

The stone does all the talking

Annamarie had seen a flagstone and Willow Creek border install Heritage Outdoors had done and knew exactly what she wanted. No convincing needed. Natural flagstone laid in a circle around an existing fire ring, bordered by a clean Willow Creek paver ring. Sometimes a customer comes to you with a clear vision and your job is simply to execute it well.

The fire ring was already in place — Heritage Outdoors built the flagstone circle patio around it. Getting the sizing right was the key decision. We recommend a minimum 14-foot diameter for any firepit circle patio — enough room to pull chairs comfortably around the fire without sitting too close to the heat. Function has to be part of the equation, not just aesthetics.

Every piece of natural flagstone is unique. No two patios built with it will ever look the same. That's exactly what makes it worth choosing.

Flagstone laid piece by piece. Every one unique.

Each flagstone is placed individually — fitting the puzzle together so the pattern flows naturally and the joints read cleanly once the polymeric sand sets.

What makes it work

Natural stone. No shortcuts.

Flagstone looks effortless when it's done right. Getting it there takes real skill and the right approach on every step of the install.

01
Size the circle for function
A 14-foot minimum diameter is Heritage Outdoors' standard recommendation for firepit circles. Smaller feels cramped and forces seating uncomfortably close to the fire. Getting the size right before any stone is laid is the first and most important decision.
02
The puzzle of natural stone
No two pieces of flagstone are the same shape. Laying a tight, even pattern requires reading each piece and finding where it fits — not forcing pieces into positions they weren't made for. The result should look natural, not forced.
03
Willow Creek border does the framing
The Willow Creek paver ring gives the circle a clean, defined perimeter. It separates the organic flagstone field from the surrounding yard and gives the whole installation a finished, intentional look that natural stone alone can't provide.
04
Base prep is everything
Natural flagstone requires the same proper base preparation as any paver install — excavated to depth, compacted aggregate, screeded bedding layer. Skip any of it and the stone shifts, rocks, or heaves through Minnesota winters. No shortcuts on base depth, ever.

"Annamarie knew what she wanted the moment she saw another flagstone install we'd done. Sometimes that's the best kind of project — a customer with a clear vision and the trust to let you execute it. The stone took care of the rest."

Common questions

Flagstone firepit patio questions we hear often

What is a flagstone firepit circle patio?

A flagstone firepit circle patio combines natural cut flagstone laid in a circular pattern around a central fire ring, typically bordered by a concrete paver ring for a clean, defined edge. The result is a naturalistic, organic gathering space that looks like it belongs in the landscape rather than sitting on top of it. Each flagstone patio is completely unique — no two pieces of natural stone are the same.

What size should a firepit patio be?

Heritage Outdoors recommends a minimum 14-foot diameter for a firepit circle patio. This gives enough room to safely and comfortably pull chairs around the fire without sitting too close to the heat. Smaller circles feel cramped and force seating uncomfortably close to the fire ring. The Annamarie project in Highland Park was sized to meet this standard for a comfortable, functional gathering space.

Can you add a patio around an existing fire ring?

Yes — Heritage Outdoors can build a flagstone or paver circle patio around an existing fire ring. The key is ensuring the base preparation is done correctly regardless of the existing ring — proper excavation, compacted aggregate base, and bedding material must be installed to spec. On this Highland Park project, the homeowner had already installed the fire ring and Heritage Outdoors built the flagstone circle patio around it.

How much does a flagstone firepit patio cost in Saint Paul MN?

Natural flagstone firepit patios are priced based on the size of the circle, the type of flagstone selected, and site conditions. Heritage Outdoors has a $5,000 project minimum across all services. We always provide a free on-site estimate so you know exactly what you're looking at before committing.
