Saint Anthony Park — a hillside reclaimed with natural stone

Heritage Outdoors completed a tiered boulder wall and natural stone steps project in Saint Anthony Park in 2025 — a hillside that had been losing ground for years, reclaimed with properly built fieldstone. Saint Anthony Park sits on the western edge of Saint Paul near the University of Minnesota's St. Paul campus, with tree-covered residential streets, significant grade variation, and properties that reward quality hardscape work.

The boulder wall and steps combination is one of the most versatile and durable solutions for hillside terrain in this neighborhood. No concrete, no polymeric sand — just properly placed fieldstone with fabric behind each course. It integrates with Saint Anthony Park's naturalistic character in a way block systems don't. The steps make the hillside usable. The wall holds it in place. Both hold up through Minnesota winters without maintenance.

What we deal with

Saint Anthony Park properties have specific terrain

Hillside terrain needs the right solution
Saint Anthony Park has significant grade variation — hillside lots where grade changes between street and backyard require retaining solutions that are engineered for the load and drainage conditions. Boulder walls built with proper fabric placement and drainage routing are the right answer for this terrain. They hold, they drain, and they look like they belong.
Natural stone fits the neighborhood character
Saint Anthony Park is one of the more naturalistic Saint Paul neighborhoods — tree canopy, mature landscaping, homes that have character. Natural fieldstone boulders integrate with that setting far better than manufactured block systems. The tiered wall and steps we built here look like they've been there for decades, not like they were installed last season.
Steps make hillsides livable
A hillside without steps is a hillside that doesn't get used. The natural stone step installation paired with the boulder wall at this Saint Anthony Park project transformed a grade change from a hazard into an access point. Properly set stone steps built to hold through frost cycles — not shifting concrete slabs — make a real difference in how a property functions.

"The Saint Anthony Park boulder wall and steps is a classic Heritage Outdoors project — hillside terrain, natural stone, and work that integrates with the character of the neighborhood. The hillside got reclaimed. The stone looks like it belongs."
