Project overview

Rugged, rustic, and perfectly at home on acreage

Jonathan had acreage, a good eye, and a clear sense of what he wanted — a walkway running from the front of his home all the way to the back, but nothing that felt suburban or manicured. He wanted something that fit the land. Something rugged and rustic and outdoorsy.

Natural stone was the obvious answer. And the fact that it was a side path made it an even better fit — natural stone isn't a precisely engineered material. Thicknesses vary, edges aren't uniform, and that's exactly what makes it beautiful. On a property like Jonathan's, that's a feature, not a flaw.

The color choice came straight from the property itself. Jonathan's well water was high in iron — hard water that had stained his existing rock bed gardens a warm Cafe/Wildhorse tone over the years. Rather than fight that, we matched it. The new walkway doesn't look like it was installed — it looks like it grew out of the same land that stained those gardens.

The detail that made it

The hard water told us exactly what color to use

Jonathan's property had something you don't see every day — well water so high in iron that it had left a warm rust-and-tan stain across his existing rock bed gardens over the years. Most people see that as a problem. We saw it as a color palette.

Cafe/Wildhorse from Rock Hard Landscape Supply matched those stained gardens almost exactly. The warm gold, tan, and rust tones in the stone mirror what the water had naturally produced on the rock beds. The walkway doesn't look like a new addition — it looks like it's always been part of the property.

That's what good design looks like on acreage. You're not imposing something on the land — you're reading what's already there and building with it.

"Jonathan wanted something rugged and outdoorsy that fit the land. His hard water had already done half the color matching for us — the Cafe tone on those rock beds told us exactly where to go. When the walkway went in, it looked like it had always been there."

The honest take

Natural stone is beautiful. Here's what to know.

The good
Nothing looks more natural
On wooded and acreage properties in the East Metro, natural stone fits the setting in a way manufactured pavers never will. Each piece is unique, the variation in size and tone gives the path character, and it ages beautifully — getting better looking every year as it settles into the landscape.
The tradeoff
Not ideal for winter shoveling
Natural stone isn't a precision-engineered material. The thickness varies between pieces, the edges aren't uniform, and the surface isn't perfectly flat. Beautiful to walk on in every season — but if you're shoveling this path all winter, those natural imperfections will remind you they're there. For primary entrances with heavy winter use, manufactured pavers are usually the smarter call.

We always tell homeowners this upfront. It's not a knock on natural stone — it's just the truth about how the material performs in different applications.

Jonathan's path was a side route, primarily a summertime walkway. That's the perfect use case for natural stone. You get all the beauty and character of the material without any of the winter maintenance friction.

If you're on acreage in the East Metro — West Lakeland, Stillwater, Grant, Mahtomedi — and you want a walkway that looks like it belongs to the land, natural stone is almost always the right answer for secondary paths and garden routes. We'll tell you honestly if it's not the right fit for your specific situation.

Common questions

Natural stone walkway questions we hear often

How much does a natural stone walkway cost in Minnesota?

Natural stone walkways in Minnesota typically cost $30–$55 per square foot installed depending on stone size, site prep, and layout complexity. A 200 sq ft walkway runs approximately $6,000–$11,000 installed. Heritage Outdoors provides free on-site estimates — call 651-219-3668.

Is natural stone a good choice for a walkway in Minnesota?

Natural stone is an excellent choice for side paths and secondary walkways on acreage and wooded properties in Minnesota. It handles freeze-thaw well when dry-set on a proper base, ages beautifully, and fits naturally into rural and wooded settings. The main consideration is that the natural variation in thickness makes it less ideal for primary entrances that get heavy snow shoveling — for those, manufactured pavers are usually the better call.

What is Cafe natural stone from Rock Hard Landscape Supply?

Cafe is a natural stone product available through Rock Hard Landscape Supply in the Twin Cities. It features warm tan, gold, and rust tones and is commonly used for walkways, patios, and steps on properties where a warm, earthy natural material is the right fit. It's one of our go-to materials for wooded and acreage properties in the East Metro.
