Project overview

A defined path that pulls the whole front together

A Saint Louis Park homeowner needed a proper walkway from the street to the front door — and a side path that gave the property definition without fighting the mature landscaping around it. The answer was Willow Creek Charcoal Blend in a curved layout that follows the natural contour of the yard.

Curves require more cuts than straight runs — every paver at the arc needs to be trimmed to fit cleanly. That adds time and precision. Done right, it looks like the walkway was always there. Done wrong, it looks like a series of broken pieces forced into a shape they weren't made for.

Proper base preparation — excavated to depth, compacted aggregate, screeded bedding sand — ensures the walkway holds its grade and doesn't shift or settle through Minnesota freeze-thaw cycles.

What makes it last

Curves look natural. They take more work.

A straight walkway is more efficient — pavers drop in without cuts. Curves require every paver at the arc to be trimmed precisely so the pattern flows cleanly without gaps or forced angles. That's craftsmanship, not just labor.

The base work is identical regardless of layout — excavate to proper depth, compact aggregate in lifts, screed the bedding sand perfectly flat. The base is what determines whether the walkway looks the same in 20 years or starts rocking and shifting after the first winter.

Note: Heritage Outdoors is phasing out Willow Creek as we've seen quality decline over recent years. We now prefer RCP Tahoe and Reno lines at a similar price point — better consistency, comparable aesthetics.

Excavation & base
Dug to proper depth, compacted Class 5 aggregate in lifts. The base prevents settling, heaving, and weed intrusion — the three things that destroy walkways in Minnesota.
Bedding sand & screed
Screeded bedding sand creates the final flat surface the pavers sit on. Get this wrong and the surface reads uneven no matter how perfect the pavers are above it.
Curved layout & cutting
Every paver at the curve cut precisely to follow the arc cleanly. More time, more precision — the difference between a walkway that looks designed and one that looks cobbled together.
Edge restraints & jointing
Plastic edge restraints lock the perimeter so pavers can't migrate over time. Polymeric jointing sand locks the joints and resists weeds and insects.
Common questions

Paver walkway questions we hear often

How much does a paver walkway cost in the Twin Cities?

Paver walkways with Heritage Outdoors typically run $35–$50+ per square foot installed — same base preparation standards as patios. Curves look more natural but require more cuts, which adds time and cost. Heritage Outdoors has a $5,000 project minimum. We always provide a free on-site estimate.

What is Willow Creek Charcoal Blend?

Willow Creek Charcoal Blend is a concrete paver product popular for walkways and patios in the Twin Cities. Its charcoal tones complement most home exteriors. Note that Heritage Outdoors is phasing out Willow Creek as we've seen quality decline — we now prefer RCP Tahoe and Reno lines at a similar price point with better consistency.

Should my walkway be curved or straight?

Curved walkways look more natural and flow better with most residential landscapes, but they require more cuts and add cost. Straight walkways are more efficient and suit modern or geometric home styles. We'll talk through what fits your property and budget during the estimate.
