RCP Holland paver walkway & steps
Como Park, Saint Paul
Old, unsafe, and overdue. Now beautiful and safe for every season.
Elizabeth had been living with an aging paver walkway and steps that had become a real concern come winter. The steps especially — worn, uneven, and slick — were the kind of thing you stop inviting people over for once the first frost hits. She knew it was time.
We worked through the material and color selection together. RCP Holland in Antique Copper — a warm brick-red and brown tone — was the right call for her ivy-covered Como Park home. The color feels like it belongs on a house like hers. The steps are RCP Grand in Beachwood, a split-face concrete step that brings texture and weight to complement the pavers without competing with them.
One detail that needed solving: a downspout extension that ran across the walkway, creating a trip hazard and an eyesore. We buried it — running the extension underneath the paver base to a pop-up emitter away from the foundation. Clean surface, no hose to step over, and proper drainage handled below grade.
Worn pavers, dangerous steps, and a downspout running across the path.
The existing walkway had aged past its useful life — uneven surface, deteriorating edges, and steps that had become genuinely hazardous in icy conditions. The downspout extension running across the path was the kind of thing you stop noticing until a guest almost trips on it.

Level to the hundredth of an inch. Because shoveling should feel effortless.
One of the questions we hear most often about pavers is whether they're easy to shovel or snowblow. The answer depends entirely on how well they're installed. A paver with even a small height variation between units catches every shovel pass and every snowblower blade.
Heritage Outdoors uses a digital level that measures to the hundredth of an inch on every install. The goal is a surface so consistent that shoveling feels like shoveling new concrete — only better looking. After the first snowfall, Elizabeth reached out to tell us exactly that.

Demo, base prep, and pavers going in.
Old pavers out, base excavated and compacted, downspout extension buried below grade, and RCP Holland Antique Copper going in course by course. The Antique Copper color looks even richer in person against the ivy-covered exterior.

Beautiful, safe, and a dream to shovel.
The finished walkway runs the full length of the house in RCP Holland Antique Copper — a warm, rich tone that fits the character of Elizabeth's ivy-covered Como Park home perfectly. The RCP Grand split-face steps anchor the entry with texture and solidity. The buried downspout is invisible. And when the first snow fell, Elizabeth had nothing but good things to say.

Paver walkway questions we hear all the time
How much does a paver walkway cost in Saint Paul, MN?
Paver walkways with Heritage Outdoors typically range from $35–$50+ per square foot installed, depending on paver selection, site conditions, and any additional work like drainage or step installation. Heritage Outdoors has a $5,000 project minimum and always provides a free on-site estimate.
Are pavers easy to shovel and snowblow in Minnesota?
Yes — when installed correctly, pavers are just as easy to shovel or snowblow as new concrete. The key is a smooth, level install. Heritage Outdoors uses a digital level that measures to the hundredth of an inch on every project, ensuring a surface with no lips or height variations between pavers that could catch a shovel or snowblower blade.
What is RCP Holland and what makes it a good walkway paver?
RCP Holland is a classic brick-shaped concrete paver made by Rochester Concrete Products, a Minnesota manufacturer. It's one of the most versatile pavers available — the proportions work well in running bond, herringbone, and other patterns. The Antique Copper color blends warm brick-red and brown tones that complement older Saint Paul homes beautifully.
Can you bury a downspout extension under a paver walkway?
Yes — and it's one of the cleanest solutions for homes where a downspout extension crosses a walkway. Heritage Outdoors installs buried downspout extensions beneath the paver base that carry water away from the house and daylight through a pop-up emitter away from the foundation. It eliminates the trip hazard, keeps the walkway looking clean, and protects the foundation.
