Don came to Heritage Outdoors with a common situation — a deck overhead and bare ground underneath, space that had never been put to use. With grandkids in the yard and a new home in Hugo's Rice Lake Reserve neighborhood, it was time to turn that underutilized space into something worth sitting on.
Working around 8 deck posts is a job that requires the right equipment. Heritage Outdoors used a Toro Dingo mini skid steer to excavate precisely around each post — something a larger machine simply can't do. The result is a clean, consistent base right up to every post footing without disturbing the structure above.
Haven worked with Don on color and pattern selection. They landed on RCP Windom — a large-format face-mix paver in a deep charcoal tone — with a double sailor border of RCP Holland in Mocha. This was one of the first installs Heritage Outdoors completed in this particular Windom colorway, having a close relationship with RCP that gives our customers access to new options before they're widely available. Don is now the third homeowner in Rice Lake Reserve we've built a patio for.

The space under the deck was functional in the loosest sense — you could stand in it, but that was about it. No surface, no reason to be there. The right patio would turn it into an extension of the home's living space.

Heritage Outdoors maintains a close working relationship with RCP — Rochester Concrete Products — a local Minnesota manufacturer. That relationship means our customers get access to new products and colorways before they're widely available through other contractors.
The RCP Windom in this deep charcoal colorway was a new addition to RCP's catalog when Don's project came together. We were among the first contractors to install it — which meant Don got something genuinely fresh for his neighborhood. The Windom's large-format face-mix surface pairs with the RCP Holland Mocha double sailor border to create a combination that feels both bold and refined.

With the area excavated around all eight post footings, compacted gravel base goes in before bedding sand and pavers. Getting the base right under a deck — where you're working in a partially enclosed space — requires methodical work and the right equipment.

The finished patio fills the entire under-deck space with RCP Windom in a deep charcoal tone — a large-format paver that reads clean and modern against the home's gray exterior. The double sailor border in RCP Holland Mocha wraps the edge with a warm contrast that grounds the whole design. Don now has an outdoor living space that works in rain and sun alike, covered above and finished below.
