Four teenagers, four cars — parking problem solved
Project overview

At their limit for impermeable surface. Haven found a way through.

Ross and Jamie have four teenagers — all getting their driver's licenses. Their Roseville home had limited parking, and with a busy neighborhood street and more drivers in the house every season, they needed more room. The problem: they'd hit the city's maximum allowance for impermeable surface coverage.

Impermeable surfaces — concrete, asphalt, standard pavers — don't allow stormwater to pass through. Cities regulate how much of a lot can be covered to protect drainage and prevent runoff. Traditional driveway expansion simply wasn't an option.

Haven worked directly with the city of Roseville to identify an approved solution: a 3/4" trap rock driveway extension. Because trap rock is permeable, it doesn't count against the impermeable surface limit. The city signed off, the project moved forward, and now the family has room for all their cars — and their trailer.

Before

Limited parking, growing family, and no room to expand with concrete.

The existing driveway didn't have capacity for a household of six with four new drivers. And with the property already at its impermeable surface limit, a standard concrete extension wasn't allowed — they needed a smarter solution.

The details

Permeable by design. Stable enough for vehicles and a trailer.

Trap rock isn't loose gravel — it's crushed angular stone. The angular edges interlock naturally, creating a surface that resists displacement under vehicle weight and holds its shape through Minnesota's freeze-thaw cycles. It won't heave or crack the way poured concrete can.

Because water passes through trap rock rather than running off it, the material doesn't count toward a property's impermeable surface limit. That distinction is what made this project possible — and it's something most contractors don't know to explore.

City coordination
Haven reached out to the city of Roseville proactively — before work began — to confirm the trap rock material was approved and the project would be fully compliant. Ross and Jamie didn't have to navigate a single permit office or planning department. We handled it.
Minnesota winters
Trap rock performs well through freeze-thaw cycles. Unlike poured concrete, there's no monolithic slab to heave, crack, or spall. The surface stays stable and functional year-round with minimal upkeep.
"They went the extra mile by proactively working with the city to make sure everything was fully compliant — something we hadn't even asked them to do. This level of care and integrity built trust with us and speaks volumes to the type of people that they are."

What Ross & Jamie said after the project was done.

★★★★★

"We had such a great experience working with Heritage Outdoors! From the very start, they were incredibly helpful and personable. They spent a lot of time understanding our needs for the project and sent over a clear, detailed estimate. Throughout the process, communication was excellent — they kept us updated on every step and explained all of our options clearly. Right before the project began, they even stopped by to triple-check that we were all on the same page. Their team was friendly, competent, and full of creative ideas that made our project turn out even better than we had imagined. They also went the extra mile by proactively working with the city to make sure everything was fully compliant — something we hadn't even asked them to do. This level of care and integrity built trust with us and speaks volumes to the type of people that they are. During the work, they were very responsive to our questions and always went above and beyond to make sure we were happy. They even did thoughtful little things like bringing our garbage cans back up and closing the garage door when one of our kids forgot — such kindness and attention to detail! When the project was finished, they came back out for a final walkthrough to ensure everything was perfect. We couldn't be happier with the results or the experience. I honestly wish we had more projects to hire them for — they're just that wonderful to work with."

Common questions

Permeable driveway questions we hear all the time

What is a permeable driveway surface?

A permeable driveway allows rainwater and snowmelt to pass through the surface and into the ground below, rather than running off into city storm drains. Common permeable materials include trap rock, permeable pavers, and gravel. Because stormwater passes through rather than off, permeable surfaces typically don't count toward a property's impermeable surface limit.

What is the impermeable surface limit and why does it matter?

Most Twin Cities municipalities limit how much of a residential lot can be covered by impermeable surfaces like concrete, asphalt, and standard pavers. This protects local waterways and stormwater systems from excess runoff. In Roseville and many other suburbs, once you hit that limit, traditional concrete or paver driveway expansion isn't allowed — but permeable alternatives like trap rock often are.

Why is trap rock a good choice for Minnesota driveways?

Trap rock is crushed angular stone that interlocks naturally, creating a stable surface capable of supporting vehicles and trailers. Unlike round gravel, the angular edges resist displacement. Trap rock handles Minnesota's freeze-thaw cycles well — it won't heave or crack the way poured concrete can — and requires minimal upkeep year-round.

Do I need a permit for a trap rock driveway extension in Roseville, MN?

Because trap rock is permeable, it typically does not require a permit and does not count against your impermeable surface limit in Roseville. However, regulations vary by city and project scope. Heritage Outdoors recommends verifying with your city before starting — and we're happy to handle that outreach on your behalf, as we did for this project.
