Jacob and Haven lived in a duplex in East Saint Paul while building Heritage Outdoors from the ground up. The front retaining wall — original cinder block construction — had been failing for years. Cracked mortar, tar patches holding it together, blocks shifting apart. It was exactly the kind of wall we'd been hired to replace for other homeowners dozens of times.
So we did what we always do. Full demolition, proper base, new Versa-Lok block installed the right way. Same materials. Same standard. Same crew. The only difference was that our baby daughter was on-site in her stroller supervising the work.
This page exists because we think it says something about who we are. We don't have a different standard for our own property than we do for yours. If anything, this wall had to be right — because we'd have to look at it every day.
Cinder block, tar patches, and borrowed time
Cinder block was never designed to be a retaining wall. It holds vertical load, not lateral soil pressure. Pair that with Minnesota's freeze-thaw cycle and you get exactly this — cracked mortar, shifting blocks, tar slapped over the cracks hoping to buy another season.

Jacob and Haven spent years at this address doing what every growing small business owner does — working out of the house, estimating jobs at the kitchen table, loading equipment into a driveway that barely fit it all. Heritage Outdoors was built here as much as it was built in the field.
