Retaining Wall Replacement Versa-Lok Square Foot 8" Block · Granite Gray Corner Lot · 2.5 Days Saint Paul, MN
Project overview

A wall that was leaning, crumbling, and separating. On a corner lot with a matching wall to meet.

Angela's front yard retaining wall had reached the end of its life — leaning forward, crumbling at the face, and separating at the block joints. This is a story Saint Paul homeowners know well. Cinder block walls were never designed for retaining applications, and decades of Minnesota freeze-thaw cycles finish the job.

What made this project interesting was the corner lot. Angela had an existing wall on the other side that was in good shape — and she needed the new wall to match it in height. A quick measurement told the story: the existing wall was built with 8" block, not the standard 6" you see in most residential settings. A standard Versa-Lok block wouldn't match.

The solution was straightforward once you know the product line: Versa-Lok Square Foot block comes in an 8" height — a direct match. Granite Gray was the closest color to the existing wall. Problem solved before the first block was set. We knocked it out in 2.5 days.

Angela and her husband had recently invested in new siding — and it looked sharp. The failing wall had made the contrast even more obvious. Now everything reads as one cohesive, well-maintained property.

Before

Leaning forward. Crumbling face. Blocks separating at the joints.

Cinder block retaining walls are a common sight in Saint Paul's older neighborhoods — and so is their failure. They weren't engineered for retaining applications. Once the lean starts and the joints begin to separate, there's no patching it. The whole wall has to come out.

What made this one different

Three problems. One detail that most crews would miss.

01
Cinder block that couldn't be saved
Cinder block retaining walls are common in Saint Paul's older neighborhoods — and so is their failure mode. They were never engineered for retaining applications. Once the lean starts and joints separate, there's no patching it. Full demo and replacement is the only real fix.
02
A corner lot with an existing wall to match
The failing wall was only one side of a corner lot. The other side had an existing wall in good shape — and Angela needed the new wall to match its height exactly. Most contractors would have missed the detail that mattered: the existing wall used 8" block, not the standard 6".
03
New siding that raised the stakes
Angela and her husband had recently invested in new navy siding. The failing wall made the contrast even starker — a crisp house with a crumbling foundation edge. The replacement had to look right alongside the new exterior, not just function correctly.
"The 8" block detail is the kind of thing that separates a good install from one that looks off. We measured the existing wall, found the right product in the Versa-Lok line, matched the color as close as we could, and it came together cleanly. Angela's neighbors noticed."

What Angela said
"Haven and Jacob were wonderful to work with — thoughtful, responsive and they got the job done quickly and beautifully! A lot of our neighbors have had to also replace their retaining wall, and I've seen some go terribly wrong, but ours is solid, safe and beautiful!"

The result

Versa-Lok Square Foot. Solid, safe, and matched to the existing wall.

The new Versa-Lok Square Foot wall matches the height of the existing corner wall exactly — 8" block to 8" block. Granite Gray reads as a natural complement to both the existing stone and the new navy siding. The front of the property now looks like one intentional design, not a patchwork of different eras.

Versa-Lok Square Foot
Engineered for retaining, built to last
Unlike cinder block — which was never designed for retaining — Versa-Lok is a pinned, mortarless system specifically engineered to hold grade. Pins lock each course together, creating a mechanically interlocked wall that won't lean, crack, or separate.
The 8" match
Solved before the first block was set
Most contractors would miss this detail or work around it. A simple measurement of the existing corner wall showed 8" block — not the standard 6". Versa-Lok Square Foot comes in 8", Granite Gray was the right color. Clean match, no compromises.
2.5 days
Demo to completion, minimal disruption
From demo of the old cinder block wall to final cleanup — 2.5 days. Angela's neighbors have watched other wall replacements go sideways. This one didn't. In and out, done right, no drama.

Common questions

Retaining wall questions we hear all the time

How much does a Versa-Lok retaining wall cost in the Twin Cities?

Versa-Lok block retaining walls with Heritage Outdoors typically run $55–$70 per square foot installed with standard block. Premium wall block products can push that higher. We always present options at different price points. Heritage Outdoors has a $5,000 project minimum and always provides a free on-site estimate.

Can you replace a cinder block retaining wall with Versa-Lok?

Yes — replacing failing cinder block walls with manufactured block like Versa-Lok is one of the most common projects Heritage Outdoors handles in Saint Paul and the inner-ring suburbs. Cinder block walls were not designed as retaining walls and fail over time. Versa-Lok is engineered specifically for retaining applications and will hold significantly longer.

What is Versa-Lok Square Foot block?

Versa-Lok Square Foot is a pinned, mortarless retaining wall system made from solid concrete block. Pins lock each course to the one below and the cores are filled with 3/4" clear stone — a critical step that allows water to drain through the wall rather than build up behind it. It comes in multiple colors and the Square Foot block is available in an 8-inch height — which made it the right choice for Angela's project, where we needed to match the height of an existing wall on the other side of her corner lot.

Do you replace retaining walls in Saint Paul MN?

Yes — Heritage Outdoors serves Saint Paul and the entire Twin Cities metro. Failing cinder block walls are extremely common in Saint Paul's older neighborhoods. Call us at 651-219-3668 for a free estimate.
