Project overview

A utility pole retaining wall. We'd never seen one before.

The lead came in at the end of October — Jacob and Haven were on a babymoon vacation in Mexico. Jacob paused the movie, replied to the message, and scheduled a site visit for when he got home. That's how it works when you run a family business.

What Jacob found when he got there was something he'd never seen before: a retaining wall built entirely from reused utility and telephone poles laid horizontally along the front yard. Structurally still functional, but old and deteriorating — Margaret wanted them gone and a clean manufactured block wall in their place.

The estimate went out shortly after. Margaret approved it and asked to proceed in early spring. Then the 2023–2024 winter arrived — or rather, didn't. It was cold but snowless, and at the end of February a week of well-above-average temperatures opened a window Jacob had never had before. He called Margaret. She said go.

Heritage Outdoors started and completed this retaining wall in February 2024 — the earliest install in company history. The week after it was done, the snow came back and equipment went into storage for snow removal. Timing is everything.

Before

Utility poles as a retaining wall. We'd genuinely never seen it.

Utility and telephone poles reused as retaining walls are an unusual sight — even by Minneapolis's older-neighborhood standards. These were in working order but showing their age: deteriorating surface, weathered green treatment, and the kind of look that says "this was a solution from a different era." Margaret wanted them gone.

What made this one different

A February window. We took it.

01
The utility pole wall
Reused utility poles as a retaining wall — Jacob had never seen it before. Not a common failure mode, but the same problem: the material wasn't designed for the application. Demo and replace with something engineered for the job.
02
The February window
The 2023–2024 winter was snowless. A warm week at the end of February opened a window no one expected. Jacob called Margaret, she said go, and Heritage Outdoors started the earliest install in company history — Versa-Lok block in a Longfellow front yard in February.
03
Completed before the snow returned
The wall was done. The week after, the snow came back and equipment went into storage for snow removal season. If they'd waited for "spring," it would have been weeks later. Seizing the window was the right call — and Margaret had a finished wall while neighbors were still planning.
"We'd never started a hardscape project this early. The ground wasn't frozen, the week was warm, and Margaret said go. We finished it before the snow came back. Earliest install in company history — and one I won't forget."

The result

Clean, solid, and done before the snow came back.

Versa-Lok Standard in gray — straight courses, clean caps, proper steps integrated into the wall. The utility poles are gone. The front yard reads as a cohesive, well-maintained property. And it was done while neighbors were still looking at snow in their driveways.

Versa-Lok Standard
Engineered for retaining from day one
Unlike utility poles — which were never designed for retaining — Versa-Lok is a pinned, mortarless system specifically built to hold grade. Pins lock each course together. Cores filled with 3/4" clear stone for drainage. It won't lean, rot, or separate.
February install
The earliest install in company history
Versa-Lok doesn't require concrete footings or mortar — which means it can go in whenever the ground isn't frozen. A mild late-February week was all it took. Most homeowners don't realize how early the season can start when conditions allow.
Steps included
Integrated into the wall design
The steps weren't an afterthought — they were designed into the wall from the start, integrated into the block courses so the whole structure reads as one intentional design. Matching block, matching cap, clean transition from sidewalk to yard.

Later that spring

Margaret called back. This time for plants and mulch.

Once the wall was in and spring arrived, Margaret had Heritage Outdoors return for a plant design and install — selecting plants for the garden bed behind the new wall and finishing it off with hardwood mulch. The kind of add-on that happens naturally when a customer trusts the crew.
