Project overview

A backyard daycare space that needed to work. Budget-conscious design that delivered.

Lizzy runs an in-home daycare out of her Como Park home — which means her backyard isn't just a backyard. It's a workspace. When a large tree in the yard was removed, it took the garden bed with it and left behind a muddy, bare patch of ground that wasn't doing anyone any favors. The shade that had stunted the grass for years was gone, but so was everything else.

She knew she wanted something functional — a clean, level surface where she could put a picnic table for the kids. She also had a real budget to work with. Haven and Jacob presented material and layout options, worked through the numbers with her, and landed on a plan that fit: Willow Creek Cobblestone in the RoseCreek blend, laid in a 3-piece freestyle pattern with a connecting walkway along the house.

RoseCreek is the most popular color Heritage Outdoors has personally installed in Saint Paul. The warm brick-reds and charcoal tones against Lizzy's blue-gray stucco might sound like a bold combination — but it works. Red against cool siding reads as rich and grounded, not loud. The backyard went from a muddy problem to the most-used spot on the property.

Before

A tree came out. It left a mess behind.

The large tree had dominated this corner of the yard for years — suppressing the grass with its shade and anchoring a garden bed around its base. Once it was removed, all of that was gone too: bare dirt, disturbed soil, and no real surface for the kids to use. The yard needed a plan.

What we were working with

Three things that shaped the design.

01
Disturbed soil from tree removal
Tree removal doesn't just take the tree — it leaves behind disturbed, uneven soil where the root ball was. Before any paver base could go in, the area needed to be re-graded and properly compacted. Get the base wrong and everything above it moves. We don't skip that step.
02
A real budget to work within
Lizzy wasn't looking for a blank check project — she had a number in mind and needed a design that hit it. Haven and Jacob worked through material and layout options with her to find the right fit. Willow Creek Cobblestone gave her the look she wanted at a price that made sense.
03
A backyard that works for kids
This isn't a weekend entertaining patio — it's a daycare backyard. The surface needed to be level, stable, easy to maintain, and functional enough to anchor a picnic table. Pavers check every box: flat, durable, easy to sweep, and they handle Minnesota freeze-thaw without cracking.
"RoseCreek against that blue stucco — people second-guess it until they see it. Warm red tones against a cool gray or blue siding is one of those combinations that just works. It's the most popular color we've installed in Saint Paul for a reason."

The result

250 square feet of RoseCreek cobblestone. The most-used spot in the yard.

Willow Creek Cobblestone RoseCreek — warm brick-reds and rich charcoals in a 3-piece freestyle pattern that feels handcrafted, not templated. A connecting walkway runs along the house to the patio, giving the whole space a coherent flow. The blue-gray stucco behind it sets the whole palette off perfectly.

Willow Creek RoseCreek
Saint Paul's most-installed color
RoseCreek is the most popular Willow Creek color Heritage Outdoors has installed in Saint Paul — and for good reason. The warm brick-red and charcoal blend complements the stucco, brick, and painted siding common in Saint Paul's older neighborhoods.
3-piece freestyle pattern
Organic, handcrafted feel
Three paver sizes laid in a non-repeating pattern — no rigid grid, no mechanical repeat. The freestyle layout complements the tumbled texture of the Cobblestone pavers and gives the patio a natural, settled-in quality that a standard bond pattern can't match.
Patio + walkway
Connected, functional layout
The patio connects to a walkway that runs along the house — giving the backyard a clear flow from the door to the play area. One continuous hardscape surface, easy to maintain, level underfoot, and built to handle years of daily use by the daycare crew.

Paver patios with Heritage Outdoors typically run $35–$50+ per square foot installed in the Twin Cities metro, depending on paver material, size, and site conditions. What is Willow Creek Cobblestone RoseCreek blend?

Willow Creek Cobblestone is a tumbled concrete paver available in multiple color blends. The RoseCreek blend features warm brick-reds and charcoal tones — it's the most popular color Heritage Outdoors has installed in Saint Paul. The tumbled finish gives it an old-world, handcrafted appearance that works especially well against blue, green, and gray siding.

Can a paver patio be installed where a tree was removed?

Yes — as long as the stump and root ball have been properly ground down and removed. Tree removal often leaves behind disturbed, uneven soil that needs to be re-graded and compacted before a paver base can be installed. Heritage Outdoors handles the base prep from scratch to ensure proper drainage and a stable, long-lasting surface.

Do you install paver patios in Como Park, Saint Paul?

Yes — Heritage Outdoors serves Como Park and all Saint Paul neighborhoods, as well as the entire Twin Cities metro. Call 651-219-3668 for a free on-site estimate.

What is a 3-piece freestyle paver pattern?

A 3-piece freestyle pattern uses three different paver sizes laid in a non-repeating, organic arrangement — as opposed to a standard running bond or herringbone. The result is a natural, varied look that works well with tumbled pavers like Willow Creek Cobblestone. It's a great choice when you want a patio that feels handcrafted rather than geometric.
